I love my hair hair. Why, well I was born with it and because my Mum and I have always taken care of my hair. That is the most important thing when dealing with hair. Take care of it no matter what the length, texture and colour.
I was born with a head full of soft curly hair. Over time as I was growing up it changed. When I was in Primary school, my hair would be done by my Mum, Aunty, Childminder and occasionally a hair dresser when I were to be going on holiday. I quickly learnt how to do my hair by doing my dolls hair even though they had white people hair. When I started secondary school, I would do my natural hair every morning or the night before depending on the hair style that I wanted to have. I quickly realised that doing my hair was taking up a lot of my time in the mornings, so I had now decided that I it would be beneficial to have my hair in single plats with extensions. This shaved off a lot of time for me in the mornings. Throughout my first three years of having extensions in secondary school, I would have my extensions in and out to give my hair a break. By year 10, I started to wear weaves and crochet braids. So, I would now be going to the hair dressers every six weeks. #alotofmoney
By the age of 16/17 I learnt how to properly install my extensions, weaves, crochet braids. No more trips to the hairdressers! I saved so much money this way. Now it got to the point were doing my hair at all was very time consuming, yes, I do still love doing my hair but I just do not have any time to do it. So, I started wearing wigs. Whip in on and whip it off. All you need to do is cornrow your hair that should last a week. No time is wasted. I could be going into college with different hair every day. Yes, I would still have my natural hair out and when I did I would get comments like ‘WOW, your hair is so nice”, “why do you wear fake hair”. The one question that I would ALWAYS get is “CAN I TOUCH YOUR HAIR?” …NO! Why am I going to let your non-clean hands touch my hair? I personally think that is just rude. How are you going to mess up my hair like that?
I am now an adult and I still do the same things with my hair. Wig, weave, crochet or Natural hair. The one thing that I have changed is that I had shaved the back/ bottom of my head (undercut). I have bleached and died it a range of colours. This is one of the most harmful thing that I have done to my hair. The reason I did this was because I saw it on someone and thought that it looked nice and I was going for a change. So, I did, I knew that putting so much chemicals I would have to shave it off and start again. This is why I only played with the back of my hair. And I still love my hair. It has now been three years and the hair is growing back nicely in a caramel colour. I have a range of wigs that I wear, from all black, to bleach blond and lilac. I find that almost every day now I am changing my hair. When I put on a wig I feel like a different person. A bit like Miley Cyrus, when she puts on her wig she is then Hanna Montana. That is how I feel.
I still get asked a lot of questions about my hair how I do it, how I hide it, why I change it so often, and what products I use in my hair. It is pretty simple.
I wash it every one to two weeks, I may do it before it gets to a week if I have been using gel in my hair.
I do not use heat for unnecessary reasons. ie. I use warm water to wash, and air dry it.
When in the drying process, I plat or twists my hair in 4-6 sections. This allows my hair to stretch and to keep tangled free.
I oil my scalp with ether, olive oil, black castor oil or Indian hemp when semi dry.
Lotion my hair with leave in conditioner mixed with olive oil. Or a hair lotion.
I use a wide tooth comb, afro comb and a detangle brush
I DO NOT LET PEOPLE TOUCH MY HAIR. I wash my hands before and after i touch my hair.
I plat or twist it before I go to sleep.
When wearing a wig, I cornrow my hair or do flat twists and put the wig on. I re-plat my hair every week so I can massage my scalp. I CAN NOT JUST REMOVE MY NATRAL HAIR FROM MY SCALP!
I eat healthy foods that will strengthen my hair and body.
When I do my hair I am positive and thankful.
